Dar Tisaa is a grand, tall house of impressive proportions,
with a gazing pool in the courtyard and the best roof terrace view of
the medina we offer. Perfect for a party of six, Dar Tisaa offers three
large suites, each with private bath.
A Walking Tour of Dar Tisaa:
From the souk, one enters Dar
Tisaa through the heavy original door and passes into a narrow, highly
decorated entryway, with original zellij tile and a painted ceiling. Leaving
the entryway, one steps into the towering central courtyard of Dar Tisaa.
The eye is drawn upward, past the tiers of windows and balconies, to the
carved and painted ceiling framing the covered iron grate high above.
Dar Tisaa's ground-floor courtyard, the wonderful primary living level
of the house, has a gazing pool set into the marble and zellig mosaic
patio. This space is framed on two sides by the two tall doorways of the
ground-floor salons, the entryway to the delightful small tiled kitchen,
and a stunningly-ornate fountain crevice with carved and painted ceiling,
intricate mosaic and carved plaster.
From this level, the house expands upward by way of flight after flight
of original zellij stairways, which lead to the three suites and their
private baths, each decorated with wonderful and sometimes humorous finds
from the souks. The huge master suite has a painted ceiling high above,
stained glass windows that open onto the central courtyard and a door
which gives onto the balcony high above the ground floor. In one bathroom,
an olive jar functions as a sink. In another, one finds a pair of Moroccan
barber chairs from the tiny barber stalls in the souks.
Continuing up from the suites, one reaches the roof terrace, which has
the best view of all the houses we know in Fes, a panoramic 360 degree
view of the Fes medina and the hills surrounding it. From here one can
see the hillside under the Merenid Tombs where the tanners lay the multi-colored
skins to dry in the sun. One can see the rooftop activity of all of Fes,
and the tall peak of Fes' guardian mountain, Jebel
Zalagh. A comfortable sitting area on this level and a rooftop kitchen
provide for breakfasts or romantic evening meals on the terrace.
