Exquisitely Adorned Courtyard of Dar Ban Safi, Fes, Morocco
The Dar Ben Safi is a lovely traditional Dar with a courtyard spectacularly tiled in blue and white tiles, with intricate mosaics extending up the walls of the courtyard. Twin salons look onto the courtyard through tall keyhole cedar doors capped by intricately-carved plaster. An inset niche forms a wonderful sitting area in the courtyard.

Off a small hallway from the courtyard, a full kitchen with grey marble counters allows guests to cook meals in, or have a Moroccan cook serve traditional meals in the salon off the courtyard for a serene evening at home.

Dar Ben Safi has three double bedrooms (one on the ground floor and two on the second floor), a small walk-through single room on the second floor, one very small single bedroom on the mezzanine floor with a single bed and two small "frash" or Moroccan banquettes. There is also a salon on the second floor with two traditional "frash" banquettes. The house fits 6-8 people comfortably, and its numerous "frash" give flexibility for slightly larger groups.

Dar Ben Safi has three full bathrooms tiled in traditional zellij, and one half-bath. Because of the layout of this traditional house, the bathrooms are not ensuite. The two full bathrooms have large walk-in showers and are beautifully tiled-one in green and white with a brass sink and traditional tadelakt, and one in warm rose tones.

A roof terrace with a view of the medina gives guests the opportunity to sit and enjoy the sunset and the evening call to prayer over the Old City.

The Dar: The Traditional Design of a Moroccan House

The Dar (or "house") is a traditional Moroccan house organized around a central tiled courtyard. Salons look out into the courtyard through arched doorways and large, graceful doors, often in a keyhole pattern. Unlike a Riad, whose courtyard is planted with a garden and often receives the rain falling at its center, the roof of the traditional Dar is now often covered with translucent material, preventing rain from falling into the center of the house while allowing in light. The Dar typically has no windows onto the street outside. Instead, all windows open inward to the open-air central courtyard that is the heart of the house.
